Throughout the year, volunteer opportunities may become available to NTAS members. As these opportunities become available, the membership will be notified, either via email or at a monthly meeting. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and all participants must have an emergency contact on file. Depending on the event, signing an additional liability waiver may be required.
Volunteers must be organization members in good standing and follow the NTAS Code of Ethics: I pledge that I will not intentionally violate the terms and conditions of any Federal, State, or Local antiquities statutes concerning cultural resources or engage in the practices of buying or selling artifacts for commercial purposes or engage in the willful destruction of archeological data or disregard proper archeological field techniques. I understand that failure to follow these guidelines will provide grounds for expulsion from the Society.
Archeology can be hard, but it's work we love to do! Much of our volunteer work consists of excavation and screening of soils. Volunteers are often asked to stand or kneel for long periods of time, you may be asked to lift heavy objects, and there is a lot of digging involved. You will get dirty and/or wet. No experience is required. We will teach you proper excavation techniques, basic artifact handling and identification, and site recording.
If a lab work opportunity becomes available, NTAS members will be notified. Lab work typically consists of washing, sorting, weighing, cataloging, analyzing, and preparing artifacts for curation. Most volunteer positions in the lab are not as physically demanding and can be more time flexible. No experience is required, but we recommend individuals volunteer in excavations before participating in lab work. We will teach you how to wash, identify, sort, and catalogue artifacts.
We also need people to help at NTAS monthly events, assistance with excavations, surveys, lab projects, tours, presentations, participants on committees, and assistance with the Executive Committee. This includes preparing rooms for events, important committee roles, field and lab roles, and more.
If you have interest to volunteer with NTAS in any capacity (field, lab, committees, and more) please contact info@ntxas.org or call 817.381.8117. Thank you! And we look forward to seeing you at the next event and assisting this 100% volunteer organization.
